Controls Engineer

Controls Engineer – Full Time Position – Charlotte, NC

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop designs, specifications, and control schemes for automation equipment and the integration between automation and information systems.
  • Author, write, program automation logic to control equipment, machines, and the flow of information.
  • Design and install wiring to reliably communicate information between measurement and control element devices and control equipment-PLC programming using Allen Bradley.
  • Assist in designing electrical/control-wiring schematics on CAD system-Design of control logic and control schematics.
  • Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) in accordance with the design documents in order to meet the functional requirements.
  • Be available for on-call support after normal working hours when needed-Mentor more junior level engineers in areas of expertise.
  • Assure high quality in the testing phase.
  • Makes customer site visits as necessary to help solve in field issues.
  • High awareness of client satisfaction level and client needs.
  • Participate in lessons learned meetings with team members after completion of programs/projects.
  • Periodic travel up to 25% may be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/ Experience & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science or related field and 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment that involves motion controls and robotic experience preferably in the packaging automation industry. However, a combination of experience and/or education will be taken into consideration.
  • Demonstrated ability to program motion control systems and robotic machines.
  • Experience with Fanuc robots preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence with robotic and PLC programming (Ladder and structured text).
  • Demonstrated competence with current application platforms: AB and/or Elau.
  • Strong knowledge of ControlLogix PLC.
  • Strong knowledge of complex PLC based motion control.
  • Demonstrated competence with mechanical robotic setups and upstream and downstream equipment.
  • Demonstrated competence with code standardization and modularization.
  • Ability to interact with clients from project initiation through the entire development and manufacturing process.
  • High result orientation and cost sensitivity.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering development process utilizing CAD or related engineering software techniques.
  • Knowledge of PLC and software development.
  • Highly developed customer orientation.

Robotics Field Service Engineer

The Field Service Engineer (FSE) will perform services on robotic packaging equipment. The FSE will setup mechanical/electrical/pneumatic/PLC systems to meet customer acceptance operational criteria. The Field Service Technician will be responsible for providing training to both operators and maintenance personnel at customer facilities, completing on-site system evaluations, installing machine enhancements, and testing and calibrating parts to meet product specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Install and setup equipment (mechanical, electrical and PLC) and robotic systems to meet customer acceptance operational criteria
  • Experience working with FANUC or ABB robotics is preferred
  • Provide operator/maintenance training, and formal machine training to customers when required
  • Complete on-site system audits/evaluations for the purpose of identifying the root cause of issues preventing the system from meeting customers’ expectations
  • Use an “eyes-wide-open” approach when in the field to proactively review other onsite equipment and offer services and/or report back to Pearson Service Support Team with potential customer opportunities
  • Install packaging and robotic systems machine enhancements/upgrades/retrofits from engineering drawings, which will include machines or fabricated parts to relatively large or heavy sub-assemblies and complete units, and then testing and calibrating parts and mechanisms to meet tolerances and product specifications
  • Document all on-site activities, findings, and recommendations for customer review and approval prior to leaving the customer’s facility, including documenting any follow-up actions
  • Perform proactive work, such as contacting customers to see how equipment is performing, following up on previous service calls, or providing technical support from home when not scheduled for customer visits and logging all activities into appropriate tracking systems

Qualifications

  • Experience installing, training, and repairing machines and robotic systems specific to the packaging industry
  • Experience in fabrication, assembly, and controls/electrical work
  • Ability to read and understand 2D and 3D drawings
  • Ability to read and interpret PLC logic as it pertains to system functionality, as well as the ability to modify PLC logic to resolve issues when necessary
  • Proficient in packaging machinery training
  • Strong problem solving and independent decision-making abilities
  • Superior customer service skills, and professional/clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Experienced with Microsoft applications and CRM/ERP tools
